Best Granola alternative for iPhone

A fair side-by-side for choosing an AI note-taker: where the audio is processed, what works offline, which devices each covers and what each costs, with Granola's own pages cited for every Granola fact.

Is Aurora a good Granola alternative on iPhone?

It depends on where you meet. Neither Aurora nor Granola sends a meeting bot. Granola captures your computer's system audio and streams it to cloud transcription providers. Aurora transcribes and summarizes on the iPhone itself, and with its speech models installed needs no connection for that. Granola suits video calls on a Mac or Windows laptop, and teams. Aurora suits in-person conversations where the audio should stay on the phone. As of 26 October 2026 Aurora is iPhone only, in a private beta.

What is the real difference between them?

"No bot" and "stays on the device" are two separate claims. Granola removes the visible bot, which matters socially, and it deletes the audio after transcription. The audio still travels to two transcription providers while the meeting runs, and the notes come from cloud models. For most teams that is a sound trade. For a therapist, a lawyer, a journalist protecting a source or a board discussion, where the audio goes can decide the question.

Aurora keeps the whole speech pipeline on the phone: capture, transcription, speaker separation, summary and action items. Aurora is local-first, not network-free: it downloads its models, and the paths that exist are named in the Privacy Notice.

When should I pick Granola?

  • Most of your meetings are video calls on a laptop and you want clean system audio.
  • You want integrations, shared folders or API access, or you need Windows or Android.
  • You want the notes to build on what you type during the meeting, which is Granola's signature workflow.

When should I pick Aurora?

  • The conversations are in person: interviews, client sessions, lectures, a table of colleagues.
  • The audio and transcript should not reach a third-party transcription provider.
  • You record where the signal is poor or absent, such as a plane or a basement.
  • You want a live transcript with each voice in its own lane, and you accept that the lanes are wrong in crowded rooms.

What can Aurora not do that Granola can?

  • Calls you hear only in headphones. Aurora hears what the room hears through the phone's microphone, so a call playing in headphones reaches it only as your own voice. Why Aurora records from the room goes through each setup.
  • Anything but an iPhone. As of 26 October 2026 Aurora is iPhone only. The Mac app is in development and there is no release.
  • Export formats. Plain text is the only format Aurora exports.
  • Team features. Aurora has no shared team folders, team workspaces, CRM or external workflow integrations, and it is in a private beta. Its calendar integration reads events on the device.

What has Aurora measured about itself?

These are Aurora's own figures, each with the device, the date and where the full method is published. They are not figures for Granola, and no one else's numbers are quoted here as if they were ours.

  • On the one device measured (an iPhone 15 Pro, 26 August 2026), a one-hour recording takes roughly five minutes of Neural Engine work. Battery cost per hour is not measured yet. What on-device transcription costs on an iPhone.
  • Speaker lanes are not perfect. On real four-speaker earnings calls (Earnings-21) the median word diarization error rate was 0.34, roughly one word in three on the wrong speaker, measured on a Mac on 17 June 2026. With four people around one distant microphone (AMI) it was roughly two in three. What Aurora's speaker attribution actually scores.
  • Every network path the app can use is listed in the Privacy Notice, including the model downloads, so the claim is bounded to the speech pipeline: Aurora is local-first, not network-free. On the free tier the app also tells Aurora's own free-minutes service how many minutes you record; that service never receives audio, transcripts or titles.

More questions

Does Aurora work with Granola?

No integration exists. Aurora exports plain text, which you can paste anywhere, including into Granola.

Is Aurora available on Mac?

Not yet. A macOS target exists in the app's source, and there is no release or date.

Does Aurora need an internet connection?

Recording, transcription, speaker separation and summaries run on the iPhone, with all required speech and language models installed for offline use. Aurora is local-first, not network-free: model downloads, subscription checks, the free-minutes service, iCloud and optional diagnostics have separate network flows, listed in the Privacy Notice.

Is Granola private?

Granola publishes a training opt-out, SOC 2 Type II certification and audio deletion after transcription. It transcribes in the cloud, so the audio does leave your device while the meeting runs.

How do I try Aurora?

Aurora is in a private beta on TestFlight, free while it lasts. Invites go out in waves to people on the waitlist, one email each when the invite is ready.
